Gynecomastia and Its Types

Gynecomastia is a condition in which the breasts become abnormally large. It occurs due to hormonal changes or it can be hereditary. Other conditions that can lead to gynecomastia are obesity, drugs, medications and tumors. It can occur to the people of any age.

As far as the physical discomfort is concerned, Gynecomastia does not lead to any; but it can make the person less-confident and emotionally depressed.

Gynecomastia is of two types:

Physiologic gynecomastia

Physiologic gynecomastia occurs due to altered estrogen/androgen balance. It can also occur when the breast tissues get sensitive to normal estrogen levels. It is common in the newborns, adolescents and older men. Though it is self-limited, it can be treated in order to minimize physical discomfort and emotional distress. Usually, it takes one and a half year to get physiologic gynecomastia effectively resolved. However, physiologic gynecomastia can remain till adulthood in the case the tissue causes pain and is larger than 4 cm.

Pathologic Gynecomastia

Also known as non-physical gynecomastia, pathologic gynecomastia is caused due to chronic conditions (including renal insufficiency, hypogonadism, cirrhosis, etc.), supplements, medications, illicit drugs, and in some cases, due to tumors. It occurs when the estrogen increases too much or the androgen level decreases to a great level.

Gynecomastia treatment

Gynecomastia can be effectively treated with surgery. It is performed under general anaesthetic. The surgeon explains the procedure and the risks to the patient before starting the surgery. Then liposuction of the breast tissue is performed. In the case, the tissue is glandular, it is removed by making a small incision and all the breast that lies under the nipple is removed. If the breasts are fatty, liposuction is enough to get rid of the breast gland.

An ultrasonic liposuction is also an excellent approach. In this, the extra skin contracts and gets remodeled over the chest within a period of six weeks. And the tissue needs to be removed if the amount of the extra skin is large. The procedure takes 1-3 hours depending on the amount of the tissue that needs to be removed.
